OPEN EVENINGS - WHAT TO DO, WHAT TO DO?

Open Evenings; one of the best ways to get a taste of what your college life will be like. With the ones for St David’s coming ever closer (if you haven't booked your place yet, do it now here!), you may be wondering what you’re actually meant to do when you get there. But don’t fear – the St David’s student blog has got you covered.

1. ASK QUESTIONS

This may seem like a no-brainer, but one of the best things you could be doing at an open evening is asking lots of questions! Ask about what the course is like, how it is structured, entry requirements, tips on what to do in preparation for starting that course, for a few examples!

2. SPEAK TO THE CURRENT STUDENTS

Throughout the evening, you’ll find many helpful ‘Student Ambassadors’, who are there to help you out! Don’t be afraid to ask for directions (speaking from experience here: I wandered in a circle twice on my first ever open evening I went to, when I could have just asked one of the student ambassadors and saved myself a lot of time!), or about their experience in the College and general College life. There will be a number of students in actual departments too, so be sure to speak with them on their experiences with the course!

3. PICK UP THE LITERATURE

Throughout the open evening, there will be a variety of leaflets and other literature, including the prospectus, newsletters, College maps, and fact sheets about the courses themselves. This will be very important after the open evening, as you will then be able to look over all the information you’ve got from the College and courses and be able to decide what is right for you! (The information is also available on the College website should you miss any of the literature!)

4. EXPLORE THE CAMPUS

One thing I highly recommend is exploring the College campus! It is a great way to get a feel for the College itself, as well as get to see all the classrooms you very well may be sitting in when you start at St David’s!

5. TRY TO BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU

The best thing I did on the open evening was have someone with me. It’s always nice to have a second opinion on things, as well as having someone to talk to about the courses as the evening goes on (they may ask a question that would have slipped your mind otherwise!).

6. ATTEND THE TALKS!

There will be a few talks throughout the evening about the College and what it entails, as well as specialist ones such as the talk for the Honours Programme. They will provide some crucial information which I recommend you don’t miss out on!

And there you have it! A few tips on how to make the most out of the St. David’s open evenings. Come and visit us on the 24th October or 13th November and see if St David’s College is right for you. Don’t forget to register on the College website!
